Sanctification: A Path To Holiness

 

Introduction

The word sanctification reminds me of our family with the most treasured old design cupboard strategically placed in the living room. Inside it were special utensils only used during special occasions like birthday celebrations or when visitors were around to serve them the best meal and drinks. This practice did not only happen in our home but it was common in our neighborhood.

As I was thinking about today's article the scripture that caught my attention is from 2 Timothy 2:20-21, "In a large house there are articles not only of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay, some are for special purpose and some for common use. Those who cleanse themselves from the latter will be instruments for special purposes, made holy, useful to the master, and prepared to do any good work."

Understanding Sanctification in the Bible

When we encounter "sanctification" in the Bible, it refers to a profound and transformative journey that believers undertake. At its core, sanctification is the process by which God sets His people apart for His special purpose and calls them to a life of holiness.

Concept of Sanctification and its significance in the life of a believer

• Being Set Apart for God's Purpose:

Sanctification can be traced back to the Old Testament, where God called His people to be holy, setting them apart from the world to fulfill His divine plan. Leviticus 20:7-8 emphasizes this idea, "Consecrate yourselves, therefore, and be holy; for I am the LORD your God. Keep my statutes, and do them; I am the LORD who sanctifies you. "Here sanctification involves consecrating ourselves to God's will and living in obedience to His commands."

• A Process of Transformation:

In the New Testament, sanctification takes a deeper meaning. While believers are already sanctified through the redemptive work of Jesus Christ (Hebrews 10:10), the term is often used to describe the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit in making us more like Christ. It is a journey of growth and maturation, as we strive to reflect the character of Jesus in our thoughts, words, and actions.

Paul beautifully captures this progressive aspect of sanctification in Romans 6:22, "But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life." As we yield to God's transforming power, the fruit of sanctification becomes evident in our lives, culminating in eternal life with Him.

• A Joint Effort with God:

Sanctification is not a solitary endeavor; rather, it involves cooperation between believers and God. Philippians 2:12-13 affirms this, "Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure." As we seek to grow in holiness, God's Spirit empowers us to overcome sin and live according to His purpose.

• Tools for Growth:

God has provided essential tools to aid our sanctification. The Word of God, the Bible, acts as a guide, revealing His will and His promise to His people. Prayer serves as a means of communion with God, expressing our dependence on Him. Fellowship with other believers encourages and strengthens us on our journey. Acts of kindness and evangelism reflect our devotion to God and His kingdom.

Conclusion

In the Bible, sanctification embodies a transformative process where believers are set apart for God's special purpose and grow in holiness, becoming more like Jesus Christ. It is a joint effort, where His Spirit empowers us to walk in obedience and reflect His character in our lives. As we actively participate in this sanctification journey, we draw closer to God, preparing ourselves for the eternal life that awaits us with Him.
